NEW YORK STUDENTS ARE MTNA NATIONAL COMPETITION WINNERS
Competitions
are held each year in all of the member states of MTNA, winners of
which then go on to Division level events. Final rounds were held at
the National Conference of the MTNA in Atlanta, Georgia in late March. New York is very proud of its students who won these national prizes.
Violinist Emerson Millar of Ithaca won Second Place in the MTNA Junior String Competition, sponsored by the Yamaha Corporation of America. She is a student of Linda Case. Violinist Keir GoGwilt of New York City,
and a student of Lewis Kaplan, won Second Place in the MTNA Senior
String Competition, sponsored by the MTNA Foundation Fund. Pianist
Yi-Yang Chen, student of Douglas Humpherys in Rochester, won Second Place in the MTNA Senior Piano Competition, sponsored by the Yamaha Corporation of America. Third
Placewinner of the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition, sponsored by
the MTNA Foundation Fund, was Quinn Elliott Lewis. He studies baritone
saxophone with Chien-Kwan Lin at the Eastman School. The First
Placewinner of the MTNA Young Artist Chamber Music Competition,
sponsored by the Allen I. McHose Scholarship Fund, was the Red Line Sax
Quartet. Members of the Quartet include Doug O’Connor, soprano
saxophone, Brandon Kies, alto saxophone, Gai Qun, tenor saxophone, and
Quinn Elliott Lewis, baritone saxophone. Their teacher is Chien-Kwan
Lin, at the Eastman School.
